Montana High School Softball: Building a Legacy of Competition and Community
Fast pitch softball has been a cornerstone of Montana girls’ high school athletics since it was first sanctioned by the Montana High School Association (MHSA) in 1986. That inaugural season featured a single classification, with teams from across the state competing for one unified championship. As interest and participation steadily grew, so did the structure of the sport.
By 1992, the MHSA split the competition into two classifications—Class AA and Class A-B—allowing schools to compete on a more level playing field. Continued expansion led to a further division in 1997, separating Class A and B into distinct tournaments. In 1999, the inclusion of Class C schools led to the creation of the B-C classification, solidifying softball’s reach across every corner of the state.
Today, MHSA softball features three state tournaments, each showcasing the grit, talent, and sportsmanship of Montana’s student-athletes. From small towns to larger communities, high school softball continues to unite fans, families, and athletes—growing the game with every pitch, play, and championship moment.
