RE:                   UPDATE – MHSA CORONAVIRUS RESPONSE / INFORMATION

Good afternoon:

I hope you are staying healthy and staying safe.  The information we are receiving continues to be ever changing. The Governor’s shelter-in-place order extends to April 10th.  With the President extending his coronavirus recommendations to April 30th and with COVID-19 cases increasing every day in Montana, we may be looking at restrictions being extended.  I will provide you with current updates as information becomes available.

1) Spring Activities Update - The MHSA Executive Board and Staff doesn’t want to give false hope regarding the resumption of spring activities, however we don’t want to make a decision when there still is hope and there is not enough information at the present time on what the future holds.  All MHSA activities are postponed at this time and any future dates of events will not be determined until action is taken by the MHSA Executive Board.  The MHSA Executive Board will be reviewing options for the continuation of spring activities including a variety of different formats / restructuring / etc. for both music and sporting events with those options being formulated by the MHSA staff and those options will be considered by the MHSA Executive Board.    This plan allows for the possibility that all MHSA spring activities may resume and that they may be in a completely different format from the originally scheduled event.  Each sport and activity is different and as we review how we may resume, if possible, we understand there are different dynamics that may lend to an event not being able to be held.  We are very cognizant of the possibility of conflicts especially in May however the Board will mitigate those conflicts to attempt to treat all activity participants in a consistent and fair manner. The Board will make a decision regarding the continuation of spring activities by April 13th.    If the spread of the virus subsides and the guidance from the CDC, State Health, the Governor, and other agencies is adjusted, the Board will then determine the proper course of action relevant for spring activities in relation to the current information available at that time.  I will keep all schools informed of their decision and how each activity would resume (format/schedule/meets/tournaments) if possible, with the information available.

2) MHSA Staff – staff will be working remotely from home while the shelter-in-place directive is in effect.    You can contact them by leaving a message on their office phone (they will be checking voicemails remotely), calling their cell number, or sending an email.  They will respond as soon as possible.

3 Dragonfly - School administrators were provided an opportunity last week to view a webinar from Dragonfly regarding the school’s use of their platform for MOA officials beginning this spring and for our schools beginning next school year.  The webinars were a great success with 121 individuals viewing the webinars.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me.  Thank you for your understanding and please stay healthy and stay safe.

RE:                   MHSA SPRING ACTVITIES STATUS

The MHSA Executive Board, during a conference call to conduct Association business on Monday morning, took the following action regarding MHSA Spring Activities:

This includes practices and contests/meet/festivals.  The Executive Board will reevaluate this situation on April 13th and any additional information regarding spring activities will be provided as it becomes available.

·         If spring activities are resumed, the practice requirement for sports at that time will be five practices from resumption except for golf which will be the normal two practices required.

·         Post season formats will be adjusted by conferences as necessary with MHSA approval.

Thank you and if you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

RE:                   MHSA SPRING ACTIVITIES STATUS – ADDITIONAL CLARIFICATIONS

As you are aware from my previous email yesterday, the MHSA Executive Board, indefinitely suspended all MHSA spring activities until further notice. This includes practices and contests/meets/festivals.  The Executive Board will reevaluate this situation on April 13th and any additional information regarding spring activities will be provided as it becomes available.

Implementing this suspension is taken in part with consultation with public health officials to:

  • Implement best practices in slowing the spread of COVID 19 and therefore aid in protection of students and the general public.
  • Reduce competitive inequity among member schools.
  • Have the opportunity to hold our spring state tournaments/events on the assigned dates/sites.

During the suspension, MHSA member schools are not to compete in games or contests. Member schools are not to conduct practices in MHSA sanctioned sports or activities at any location.  Member schools’ coaches or student athletes are not to hold meetings or schools are not to allow students or coaches to use the school’s athletic facilities for a practices, games or contests in any MHSA sanctioned sport.   Open gyms are also suspended during this period.

The MHSA office as well as the Executive Board, will continue to monitor the rapidly changing landscape of the COVID-19 information and will work with our member schools and health officials to make informed and well thought out decisions.

Additional information will be sent to schools and/or districts as it becomes available.
