Boys' basketball, in Montana, dates back to 1911 when the first state championship was played. Those first tournaments were sponsored by and staged on the campus, of what was known as, Montana State College in Bozeman. Four classifications evolved after 22 years of just one class. Girls' basketball had its first state champion named in 1972 and became a four classification program after the fifth year of competition.

Important dates for the 2012-13 Season:

First Practice Day:  November 19, 2012
*First Day for Competition:  November 30, 2012
State Tournament Dates (Girls' A and C): February 28 - March 2, 2013
State Tournament Dates (Combined AA, Combined B; and Boys' A and Boys' C): March 7-9, 2013

*No individual shall play in any Association basketball contest until he/she has a minimum of ten (10) days of basketball practice with at least one practice session per day on ten (10) different days (no practice permitted on Sunday) prior to the date of the first allowable game.
