Tennis was a part of State Interscholastic in Missoula annually
since boys' competition began in 1929. Girls were added in 1935. Until
1970 only individual champions were recognized. Team champions in one
classification were named beginning in 1970. Classes were split to AA
and ABC in 1978-79. Presently there are AA, A and BC champions
recognized. Singles' champions were the only honorees for girls until
1946 and then doubles' teams were also crowned. Boys have played both
singles and doubles championships since the first year, 1929.
Interscholastic included tennis, golf, track and field, thespians, and
journalism, also sponsored by the then-named Montana State University.
That continued until the late 60's.
