Girls' fast pitch softball was sanctioned in 1986 for the first time and it has grown in numbers at a steady pace since that time. There was one class the first year through 1991. In 1992, AA and A-B were split into separate classifications and champions were crowned in each classification.  In 1997 classes A and B were also separated.  In 1999, some class C schools began to participate forming the B-C classification and now three state tournaments are staged
